These skis made it possible to travel far out into almost impassable snowed-in countryside to hunt game and gather wood. The telemark ski also helped keep social contacts between people in rural areas alive – they went to each other’s homes on skis!

Skiers with a strange, bobbing and low skiing style suddenly began appearing on the slopes in the 1980s. The telemark skier was born and the slalom ski had gained a competitor. Today, telemark skiing is also a sport, with various competitive disciplines.

The equipment is becoming more sophisticated all the time so that it can withstand tougher stresses and skiing styles. The telemark ski is wider than the touring ski. The boot is made of leather or plastic, with or without bindings. The skiing feels more stable in a hard boot with bindings.

Entirely traditional telemarking calls for a simple leather boot and a narrow ski. The freedom and the feeling of ascending a mountain with enjoyable, untouched slopes and of being outdoors in the midst of nature – just you and your skis – are immense. Perhaps that is why more skiers are trying telemark skis.
